| DO NOT BUY.As other reviewers have noted, this book contains typos, errors, and incorrect answers demonstrative of a startlingly sloppy editing process. From the Arithmetic section alone, four questions contained typos, errors, or apparently missing information. I attempted to overlook the fact that more than 10% of the problems in this set were unusable and to continue with the rest of the text, but I quickly found that problem 2 of the Algebra set relies on the assertion that 2x4=28 (p. 34). When the book makes such patent errors of fact, I can have no confidence in its more complex problems, where the inaccuracies might not be so glaring.
The lack of care with which this book was assembled demonstrates a disregard for both Kaplan's customers and for the long-term reputation of its brand. I cannot take advantage of the money-back guarantee, because I trusted the quality of the brand and failed to retain my original sales receipt. I will not make this mistake again. I will be purchasing competitors' products for all of my future test preparation needs.
Not "advanced" or strategic enough, horribly sloppyI made the mistake of thinking that, because Kaplan is a well-known test prep company, they would have quality study products and was suckered by the title/concept of the book when I came across it in the bookstore. I've hopefully learned my lesson to always read user reviews before making important purchase decisions.
There are already enough reviews lamenting the numerous errors in the book and I wholeheartedly agree that its error frequency is at an unacceptable level.
Moreover, I think the content of the book failed to live up to its promise of being a good guide for advanced test takers wanting to perfect their math scores. In my opinion, many of the problems were way too easy and thus a waste of time. In every test I come across just a few questions that I find either difficult or too time-consuming and what I need is to practice many of just those types of questions to familiarize myself with them and find quicker ways of solving them - or judging upfront whether a certain question will be too time-comsuming and cutting my losses there. I don't believe this book meets that need. There are too many easy questions wasting time we could be spending practicing hard questions, and the questions that are hard don't have good enough explanations.
Furthermore, as someone else pointed out, there was zero discussion of pacing in the book. The most difficult thing for me on the Computer Adaptive Test is the inability to return to skipped questions. On the SAT, when I came across a somewhat tricky question, I skipped it and did all the hard questions at the end, ensuring that I maximized usage of my time. On the current GRE, however, I face a dilemma when I come across a question that looks like it might take me a long time to solve. Handling of these cases - whether to keep working until we're fairly sure of an answer, cut our losses after two minutes, guess randomly and move on, or move on right away when we see a question we're not sure of being able to answer in three minutes - is the most critical issue for me, and this book provided no advice on how to approach such situations.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any other resources that even claim to do what I'm looking for. Suggestions in the comments section would be welcome.
I was seriously considering taking a Kaplan GRE course, along with two of my friends, but after my experience with this book, none of us will be doing so, as their approach to profits is clearly aimed at riding their reputation to take in revenue and skimping on quality to save on costs. I hope the low average of these reviews causes Kaplan to reconsider before putting out another shoddy product like this. Unfortunately, I'm sure the book's title alone led to many sales of this book by people like me who ran across it in stores and failed to check reviews before purchasing.
Editing Job obviously CutSo this book has a good amount of difficult problems to study from, however it also has a few that are impossible (due to a LARGE amount of errors). In the first 22 questions in the book I found at least 4 problems that were this way... and it looks like everyone else agrees. Save your money, wait for an edited version!
Not as Bad as People Are SayingWhile, it's true that there are some very elementary errors in this book, the concepts it covers and the explanations are spot on as far as topics are concerned. While you do want to double check your answers against the explanation to make sure that Kaplan didn't make an error, this book provides a very challenging and great review for concepts some may have long forgotten. The book is not perfect, but it will guide you in learning (or relearning) very important concepts and problem types and show you how to tackle them effectively. I'm more confident in my ability and definitely more prepared to get very close to (if not achieve) that perfect score after having used this book, and that's the bottom line that matters.
Don't use this company!I am a seller with Amazon and I ship my products out within 2 days. I ordered the books from greatbookdeals based in Florida. These books didn't get mailed until 6 business days (9 days) after I ordered them. Then it took 3 weeks to get to my house. I wasn't able to take my GRE exam when I wanted to schedule it because I hadn't had the books to practice with. I am very disappointed with the service and will never again use this service. I have learned to look at the reviews first because there were many complaints from other people.
