Cracking the GRE -- 2011 Edition
In this review, I am writing to prospect customers who have either scored poorly in previous attempts of taking the GRE or customers who are about to take the exam for the first time. In my opinion, "Cracking the GRE, 2011 Edition," is money well spent and for the following reasons:
(1) the outline of instructions in the book, DVD, and Online are well organized and consistent as a whole to motivate and encourage students to focus and perform well;
(2) the "behind the scenes" philosophy for which the GRE is designed is priceless;
(3) the drills in each academic section are vital to mastering the subject concepts and speed in preparation for the real-time exam.
Therefore, seeing, hearing, and doing the work simultaneously through recurrent drills allow students to master the material before the exam. This is important because mastery elevates self-confidence and self-efficacy to accomplish the goal of achieving a high score and acceptance into the desired graduate masters or doctoral program.

Good base, but used with other sourcesI have been using these flashcards on and off now for a month and have found them very useful. However, while studying them, I have been using an online dictionary as well to hear the pronunciation of the words. In the process, I noticed that some words have multiple, unrelated definitions whereas the cards only give one of them. It may be the case that they always give you the definition that would be used in the GRE, but I find it helpful for memorization to see all fo the definitions and lump them together under that word. I was somewhat disappointed int he quality of the cards because I tried using them while exercising indoors and my sweat warped them pretty badly.
In conclusion, I think they are definitely useful if you don't want to make your own, but I wouldn't plan to use them as the sole source of vocab.

| Kaplan/Princeton Review combinationRequiring additional prep in mathematics, I followed the advice of previous users of The Princeton Review's, 'Cracking the GRE, 2010' in combination with Kaplan's 'GRE Exam Math Workbook, Seventh Edition'. 'Cracking the GRE, 2010' was a great comprehensive prep, covering not only the effective techniques to utilize when taking the exam but a great (re)primer for the quantitative section. After completing the 'GRE Exam Math Workbook', I used the The Princeton Review website to access and take their version of the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) used by ETS (the GRE author and administrator) - which is included as a part of the 'Cracking the GRE' work tools. It was great to get a feel for the exam and it was perfect for applying what I learned in writing the two essays that are now a part of the GRE. My advice, immerse yourself by blocking off a good three hours at a time for reading and testing on each chapter. Give yourself NO LESS then four weeks of good solid study prior to test.
As for results, I had previously taken a sample paper exam for the GRE,to confirm my suspicion that I needed significant study to prep for exam. After being out of university for over ten years (and already weak in mathematics) my scores were sobering. Now, the paper exam is not directly comparable to the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) exam that ETS utilizes but I think my improvement was significant enough to mention after using the Princton/Kaplan combo.
My quantitative points improved a solid 100%! That in itself was worth every penny invested in these two prep books. I scored average in the verbal section but I still experienced a 48% increase in points pushing me above the 90th percentile.

Heart-wrenching, but promising with recipes to boot!Wow, Jane Green wow'ed me again. I have to say I was getting worried that my favorite chick-lit author was turning so serious, but then I took a step back and realized that I too am getting older and ready for more mature novels. ;) I'm growing up with Jane Green.
Anyway, Promises to Keep was one of my favorite Jane Green books. The characters, in my opinion, are so easy to connect with. I fell in love with the relationships built in the story. It's about true family ties and supporting one another no matter what life throws at you. After every chapter there is a recipe from a food item mentioned in the chapter. Not only was I deeply involved with the characters and plots in the story, but after every chapter I wanted to run into the kitchen and cook for my loved ones. This is just a great read that left me pondering life, love, and happiness at the end. I literally stared out the window when I was done, counting my blessings and really being appreciative for family.

One of the Books You'll Want to UseI don't plan on taking the GRE anymore (I a graduate student now), but I read these test prep books every year to refresh my skills. I actually enjoyed preparing for the test (weird, I know) and I don't want to forget what I learned, especially the vocabulary and analytical writing content. I don't know if this is the only book you should buy for the test. However, I think it ought to be one of them!
VERBAL
------------------------
The advice they give is extremely helpful. I've always had trouble with the analogies (I scored well, thanks to an earlier version of this book). I like the idea of writing down a defining sentence with both words. It actually does help to spend time doing this. I relied heavily on flashcards when I studied for the test. I made one for EVERY word that I thought would appear on the tests (various lists exist online and in books). This was VERY helpful. However, because I did not write stuff down and THINK about the relationships in practice, I struggled with the analogies during the test.
MATH
------------------------
I had an atrocious score when I took the test. I really should have followed their advice and written stuff down (I can't remember now if they told me to do that back then). I also think that I should have used flashcards when studying for the math section as well. Some formulas and simple problems would have been good to have memorized.
The problem with this book is that I found the math section easy. Knowing my poor ability, I wonder if this book is sufficient. You may want to read and follow the advice here, but check out the math section in another book for more tips about how to approach difficult problems.
ANALYTICAL

Great advice here. In fact, I think this might be the best part of the book for test preparation. These are also some of the skills that graduate students (especially in the humanities) need on a daily basis. I would say it is definitely worth reading.
One piece of advice from my own experience, DO NOT REVISE SENTENCES AT THE LAST MINUTE. The second time I took the test, I finished my essay early, and during the last minute or so I tried to polish my last sentence. I ran out of time with the sentence in a jumbled mess! I lost points for that (score was lower than the first time I took the test, even though the essay was far better and longer).
SUMMARY
------------------------
It is definitely worth it to spend time with it. I didn't look at the DVD (read it in a bookstore), and I am not interested in taking practice tests anyways. If you are, you may want to look at the DVD version. Variety is important! Make sure to read other books as well (Barron's, Kaplan, etc.). Out of all that I have seen, I honestly don't think I could say there is only ONE book you need.
